Pitfalls When Losing Baby Weight
Okay, so we all know how difficult it is when you desperately want to lose baby weight and shed those extra pounds but nothing seems to work.
This can be very discouraging, especially when you’re still carrying after giving birth, because you need to eat sensibly so that you can look after your baby properly.
If you gave birth naturally you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least six weeks but if you had a Caesarean, it’s sensible to wait at least 10 weeks. This is important, because otherwise you could risk long term damage to your body.
But strict diets such as fruit and veg only’ are out because your body needs protein and lean meat to supply you with lots of energy for the tiring months ahead.
So how is a new mum supposed to get her body back to normal when she needs to eat very well and can’t hit the gym for at least 6-10 weeks?
Firstly – and most importantly – you need to set realistic targets. Often, new mums complain that diets aren’t working when in reality they are just expecting too much too soon!
Most dieticians agree that to regain your pre-pregnancy state, you need to give yourself around a year.
But many new mothers are so anxious to get their figure back that they embark on strict calorie controlled diets. These are very difficult to stick to – and often result in binge eating later in the day to satisfy their appetite.
And some of the main reasons mums fail towards losing baby weight are:
Other mums often bring goodies and sugary snacks to playgroups to share
Friends and family think you deserve a few treats after all you’ve been through - and rather than offend, you feel obliged to eat them
You might even find yourself eating baby’s leftover food rather than see it go to waste!
So you need to be prepared for this type of problem – and you need to accept that there will always be the occasional “bad day” when you are so exhausted that you NEED to curl up on the sofa with a bar of your favourite chocolate.
But you’ll find it much easier to avoid putting on extra weight by keeping danger foods out of the house and asking friends to support you by only bringing healthy snacks – or different treats such as a favourite magazine. Also, try and avoid reading too much of those magazine stories about A-list celebs losing two stones in just three weeks or failing that just take them as a light hearted read.
This ISN’T normal and it certainly isn’t healthy for you or baby (especially if you’re breast feeding).
Remember, celebrities usually have personal trainers, nannies and professional chefs to help them with their weight loss plan and making time for exercise.
And of course the downside is that many are so pre-occupied with looking good again in record time that they miss out on precious time with their new baby.
