Hazards For Mums Looking to Lose Baby Weight
Congratulations on becoming a proud mum!
With any luck, you will be one of the relatively few new mothers who regain their pre-pregnancy weight fairly easily – helped by either breastfeeding or being constantly on-the-go.
But sadly, the reality is very different for most mums – and on top of being totally exhausted caring for a new baby (or active toddler) they realise they aren’t going to magically regain their former figure.
So it can be tempting – particularly when there’s little time to prepare healthy meals – to skip mealtimes altogether in the hope of losing baby weight fast.
But after all the demands that pregnancy placed on your body, it’s vital to make sure that you get enough nutrients to stay healthy and have enough energy to look after yourself and your baby. Now is NOT the time to embark on a crash diet!
If you are breastfeeding, it’s better to wait until your baby is at least two months old before you even think about cutting calories. You need to make sure that baby is getting the vitamins and nutrients needed from breast milk and drastically decreasing your calorie intake can also decrease your milk supply.
The most important thing is to eat sensibly and healthily and stick to the recommended 1800-2500 calories a day. You might not lose baby weight at first but you shouldn’t gain any more and after eight weeks you can gradually start to decrease your daily intake.
The following diets are not recommended while breast feeding - or immediately after giving birth:
Low carb diets Weight loss tablets Liquid diets
And if you decide to cut back and stick to a very low calorie diet of fruit and vegetables, you will soon come up against the yo-yo effect. You might well lose weight at first but fairly soon, your body will realise that you have drastically cut its intake of calories. It will then start trying to conserve energy by slowing down your metabolism.
When this happens, your weight loss will stop and worse, if your metabolism slows down enough, you could even start regaining weight.
The real danger at this point is that you might start to think that drastic action is needed - in the form of a starving yourself.
So it’s important that you eat sensibly from the outset. In most cases, you will start to lose baby weight without even dieting at all – thanks to the extra work involved in caring for a baby.
And remember, if you are breastfeeding, that alone will burn anything from 200-500 calories a day.
